Welcome back letter from Brookeland I.S.D

Welcome Back to School – Brookeland ISD

We are off to a great start to our new school year in Brookeland ISD. Our faculty, students, parents, and community members are all valuable contributors to our success. We are looking forward to our daily work as a team. Overseeing operations at the campus level are our administrators – Principal, Charlotte Odom; Counselor, Stacy Gillis; and Assistant Principal, Ashley Powell. Mrs. Odom, Mr. Gillis, and Mrs. Powell, who have diligently prepared for the school year.

Our district is in the initial stages for construction of a new Pre K – 3rd Grade building, to provide a safer and modern educational facility. The building will provide a common corridor entry for students, with connecting hallways for our High School, 4th / 5th Grade building, and Pre K – 3rd Grade classrooms. In addition, the new wing will have offices for our Principal, Assistant Principal, Counselor, Nurse, Campus Secretary, and PEIMS Clerk.

To begin the construction process, we have signed a contract with an architectural firm and have completed a site survey. We are currently scheduled to have the present Pre K – 3rd Grade wing undergo a demolition this fall, with new construction scheduled to begin in January, and the new facility completed for use by January 2020. Cost estimates for the project indicate that our building project will be fully funded with money available in our district fund balance, therefore not requiring district voters to pass a bond package or a Tax Rate Election to fund construction of the new facility.

Due to the construction project, we relocated all of our Pre K – 3rd Grade classrooms to other areas on campus. This plan forced several classrooms to be moved, but we were able to rearrange our instructional areas within the district without purchasing or leasing portable buildings. Safety of students and teachers during this temporary phase is our top priority.

Our designated bus loading / unloading areas will remain the same as in past years, both before and during new building construction. Parents dropping off students in the mornings, or picking up students in the afternoons as this school year begins will not see any changes in those locations, until the demolition of the Pre K – 3rd Grade wing. However, as demolition of the building starts, we will use the front parking lot in front of the old gym as a staging area for construction. Fencing off the front parking lot will force us to use an alternate plan for parents dropping students off before school, picking students up after school, and visitor / faculty parking during school. Once plans are finalized, we will notify all faculty, parents, and students of those changes.

In the newest academic accountability system provided by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), this past year our district received an overall score of 88 (B), tied for the second highest scoring district in Region 5. Our campuses received multiple Distinction Designations from TEA for outstanding academic achievement. Brookeland Elementary was recognized for Distinction Designations in 2 categories; Science and Postsecondary Readiness. Brookeland High School was recognized for Distinction Designations in 5 categories; ELA/Reading, Math, Science, Post Secondary Readiness, and Closing Performance Gaps. Congratulations to our faculty and students on these exceptional accomplishments.

The successes enjoyed by our district are due to a highly motivated student body, with tremendous support from their families and friends. Our entire faculty cares for and supports our students during school and in all school sponsored activities. Thanks to the parents and community members that make Brookeland ISD an excellent district for students to receive an education. Although we are ranked as one of the highest performing academic districts in Southeast Texas, an A-F academic ranking tells only a small part of our story. We evaluate our district by our ability to develop students and individualize their educational experiences, through our extra – curricular programs, community involvement, and character development. The philosophy at BISD is to provide teachers with the resources they need for students to perform their best, focusing on each individual student.

Our district is well prepared to meet the needs of all students for the near and foreseeable future. We will face unique challenges this year unlike in past years, with the building demolition and new construction on campus this year. In addition, the district will continue to review our procedures, developing additional safety and security upgrades to benefit our students and faculty.

I encourage you to search all of the information available at our school district website at website has been upgraded recently, with a variety of new features. We look forward to another year of educational excellence in Brookeland – please feel free to contact us or stop by for a visit.
