Government and Economics

Class Syllabus ~ 2025-2026

Dear Students and family:

Welcome to Brookeland High School’s Government Class!  I am looking forward to an amazing school year. If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail or set up a conference.  Contained in this syllabus I will cover all policies and procedures for our classroom environment in addition to what we will be learning.  I have high expectations of success in my classroom and do not accept less. I expect a positive attitude and respect within the classroom. Please sign and return the recognition form attached to the back of this packet.  This ensures for me that you have read and understand the following information regarding my expectations and requirements for the year.  This is also the first daily grade for the student and is due by Friday.  After that, the student will follow my policy for late work as outlined in this packet.

Above you will find a tentative and fluid schedule of what we will be covering per six weeks within our classroom. Political opinions are individual preferences that will be respected in my classroom. Respect will be key in my classroom environment and disrespect of others' beliefs, views, and cultures will not be tolerated in our classroom setting. This is to promote good citizenship, and autonomy, and to remain on topic and schedule with our outline above. If you have any questions about what is being covered at any specific time, please email or call me.

Materials Needed for our Social Studies Classroom:

An open mind, writing utensils daily, charged Chromebook, wired headphones or earbuds daily, per handbook policy Bluetooth is not allowed.

Classroom Procedures:

Every day we will follow the same routine:

  1. Enter the classroom quietly and go directly to your seat and log in to the computer.
  2. Begin working on your daily vocabulary, quiz, or warm-up activity appropriately.
  3. The daily lesson, power point, activity, and notes.
  4. Remain on task until class is dismissed.

Attendance:

I follow all attendance and tardy procedures as described in the Student Handbook.

Make-Up Work Procedures:

If you are absent it is your responsibility to check Google Classroom’s Agenda and calendar.  Students will not be reminded or prompted to obtain their work and it is the student’s responsibility. According to district policy, students have 3 days to turn in make-up work from the last date of absence.

Athletics and School-Related Absences:

If a student is absent from class due to either athletics or a school-related activity, that student is expected to adhere to the handbook procedures. As assignments are in Google Classroom 100% each student will know ahead of time what is assigned in their agendas.

Retake Policy

If a student receives a failing grade on a daily assignment or test, they will be given 3 days to retake or correct from the date of return according to handbook guidelines. Furthermore, that assignment cannot exceed a maximum grade of 70 according to the handbook.

Late Work

Any assignments that are turned in after the due date will be graded based on the following

grading scale. In addition, any assignments that are turned in after the three days allowed by

BISD policy following an absence will be graded on this scale also.

  • ?1 Day Late - 90
  • ?2 Days Late - 80
  • ?3 Days Late - 70
  • ?4 Days Late - 50
  • ?Anything over 4 Days late is a 0

It is also at the discretion of the teacher to assign detention to get the work done, even if the grade cannot receive a higher grade than a 0. Despite receiving a 0 the student is still responsible for gaining the knowledge required.

Grading Policy

Daily Work   40%                     Tests/Quizzes 60%

Rules for Classroom Behavior

  • ?Please have ALL MATERIALS for my class each day.
  • ?Please follow directions the first time they are given, respectfully.
  • ?Please be respectful of the teacher, your fellow students, and school property through your words and actions. Our classroom will be a very social environment with discussions, group teaching, and group work. Respect and appropriate communication will be key to our learning experience.

Technology Use in the Classroom

This classroom is a 1:1 ratio of computer usage and 95% of the content will be handled on the computers. Students are not permitted to be on unauthorized materials during class. This includes, but is not limited to YouTube videos, games, or other content. If a student continues, after being warned, their computer privileges can and will be revoked, resulting in a referral, parent contact, and assignments being done by hand. Computers are an asset to this room, but also a privilege that must be handled responsibly!

Specific Behavior Violations

  • ?Good citizenship is promoted in social studies. Disrespect, bullying, and arguing in the classroom environment will not be tolerated. We are in class to learn and to promote an environment that is conducive to learning. None of the mentioned behaviors are acceptable.
  • ?Please do not argue with the teacher during class. If you feel that you were wrongly identified as misbehaving or another form of miscommunication, submit your explanation in writing and be prepared to discuss the matter calmly with Mrs. Hilderbrand after class or after school. If you do not follow this procedure and continue to argue during class time, you will receive an office referral and the discipline pyramid will be followed by the administration. This policy if for the good of the group to allow learning to take place, please respect that. Misunderstandings occur but they must be handled respectfully for us to be good citizens.

One Last Thing

My classroom will be completely 1:1 ratio with computer technology this year. The students will learn computer literacy, etiquette, and skills while building their social studies skills. Plagiarism, cheating, bullying, or other behavior that violates our technology usage will be disciplined accordingly. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS GIVEN in regard to my expectations within our technological classroom. Thank you again for your support of our school, classroom, and community! I look forward to a great year at BISD! Go Wildcats!

Sincerely,

Coach David Morgan
