Welcome!

I'm Jennifer Dixson, and I'm ready for another amazing year with our 2nd and 3rd grade RTI students! This marks my 11th year at BISD, and I'm proud to have spent so much of that time helping students build strong reading skills. I'm especially looking forward to working with this age group again and creating a fun, dynamic learning environment where every student can thrive.

In this class, we focus on foundational skills through regular assessments that support your child's growth, though no grades are assigned. Our students take Renaissance Reading and Math tests every six weeks to track progress toward learning goals. We also conduct monthly fluency testing to monitor reading speed. These assessments help us determine your child's reading level for library book selection. While formal homework is rare, reading practice at home is highly encouraged. Partnering with you in this effort by reading with your child will significantly enhance their reading fluency.

What is RtI?  Response to Intervention, or RTI, is our way of making sure every student stays on track academically. It's a proactive approach where we measure your child's skills and use that information to provide targeted teaching. Our goal is to offer timely support so that students can find success and confidence before they fall too far behind. RTI is available to all 2nd and 3rd grade students to help them thrive in the classroom.

In our 2nd and 3rd grade RTI classes, we will foster a dynamic and collaborative learning environment. We will work together as a community of learners. Our classroom will be a place of exploration and growth, built on mutual respect and curiosity.

Our class values
  • Respect: Show kindness to classmates, teachers, and school property.
  • Responsibility: Come prepared to learn and complete your work on time.
  • Effort: Always try your best, even when things are challenging.
  • Curiosity: Ask questions and explore new ideas.
  • Subject overview

    Integrated literacy (ELA)
    • Reading: Students will be grouped flexibly based on their reading levels. We will focus on:
      • 2nd grade skills: Improving fluency and comprehension by identifying the main topic and summarizing.
      • 3rd grade skills: Reading longer texts and using strategies like making inferences and finding evidence.
      • Shared activities: Students of both grades will participate in partner reading and whole-group read-alouds.
      • Writing: The entire class will participate in whole-group writing workshops, with differentiated expectations and support for each reading level.
        • 2nd grade expectations: Focus on the writing process (planning, drafting, editing) for single-paragraph pieces.
        • 3rd grade expectations: Write multi-paragraph narratives, opinion pieces, and informative texts with more advanced grammar and conventions. Cursive writing will be introduced to 3rd graders.
        • Spelling & Vocabulary: Students will use a phonics-based program to practice spelling and build vocabulary.
          • 2nd grade focus: Learn spelling patterns and apply phonics rules.
          • 3rd grade focus: Learn prefixes, suffixes, and more advanced spelling patterns.

          Mathematics
          • Math will be taught with a differentiated approach, often with a "spiral" method. While one group level works independently on review or practice, the other will receive direct instruction from the teacher.
            • 2nd grade curriculum:
              • Place value up to 1,000.
              • Two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.
              • Time to the nearest five minutes and solving money word problems.
                • Measuring length in standard units.
                • 3rd grade curriculum:
                  • Mastering multiplication and division facts.
                  • Solving real-world word problems using the four operations.
                  • Understanding fractions and equivalent fractions.
                  • Calculating area and perimeter.
                • Common Activities: Both grades will participate in whole-group warm-ups, math games, and themed projects.
                • Homework
                  • Purpose: To reinforce classroom learning and encourage independent practice.
                  • Reading: All students are expected to read for at least 15 minutes each night.
